Victory in battle celebrated with parades, food, music, and even battle reenactments. Cinco de Mayo is an annual celebration commemorating the Mexican Army’s victory over the French Empire at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1962. Cinco de Mayo is a big deal and celebrated by Mexicans, Mexican Americans, and non-Mexican heritage. Cinco de Mayo is actually more popular in America than in Mexico. In June 2005, the United States Congress called for the observance of Cinco de Mayo.

As we continue to social distance during COVID-19, a national pandemic, we must remember to remain vigilant and mindful of being around others. Practice social distancing during Cinco de Mayo to create new memories for a lifetime. Here are a few ways to celebrate safely: ❖ Eat Mexican food – prepare it or order take out. ❖ Make Margaritas for a virtual happy hour with friends. ❖ Give a shout-out in support of the celebration on social media. ❖ Have a Mexican house party by dressing up in your favorite Mexican attire. Remember to post your photos. ❖ Research and read up on Mexican history.

Today, FHS shares in this celebratory moment with millions across the United States and abroad.
